Operating Concepts

F.U. variable speed drives are traction type. They use double cone rollers of special design rotating between input and output plates to transform a constant speed to a variable speed. One or four rollers are utilized depending on the horsepower to be transmitted. Speed changes are achieved by moving the position of the rollers relative to the centers of rotation of the input and output plates.

The diagrams show the path of power transmission in the one and four roller F.U. drives, the small arrows showing the power flow.

Positive traction and constant speed under varying load conditions are maintained by an automatic pressure system. This system comprises mating cam surfaces in the output shaft which act upon each other as the load increases to provide increased pressure between plates and rollers. This increased pressure is illustrated by the large arrows.
